Day 9 · Disembarkation

Goodbye Alaska – Taking the Memories Home

Published June 21, 2026 · EPStay Travel Journal

Every great trip eventually comes to an end.

As we prepared to leave MSC Poesia, we found ourselves reflecting on everything we had experienced over the previous days.

The ship that had seemed enormous and unfamiliar when we first boarded now felt recognizable. We knew the hallways, staircases, elevators, gathering areas, dining spaces, observation points, and the route back to our cabin.

The idea of walking off the ship felt strange.

Disembarkation day required a different kind of energy. Instead of preparing for a port, we were preparing to return to airports, luggage, transportation, schedules, and ordinary responsibilities.

The girls understood that the cruise was ending, but they were not ready to say goodbye. They wanted one more meal, one more walk, one more view, one more show, and one more day aboard the ship.

Travel is not only about where we go. It is about the people beside us.

As we left, we thought about the towering glaciers, Alaska’s port communities, the mountain scenery, the cool air, the water, the meals, the laughter, and the family photographs.

We also thought about moments that were impossible to schedule in advance.

The girls searching the water for whales. Their excitement when they first saw the ship. The way they described the sound of the glacier. The conversations during meals. The jokes about getting lost. The quiet moments on deck. The way each destination became part of their childhood story.

Travel has a way of changing perspective. It reminds us how large the world is and how valuable it is to spend uninterrupted time with the people we love.

For our family, the cruise was not simply a vacation. It was an investment in memories our daughters may carry for years.

They may not remember every meal or every hallway. They may not remember the exact itinerary. But they may remember standing together in front of a glacier. They may remember the giant ship. They may remember looking for bears. They may remember the mountains touching the clouds. They may remember that our family experienced it together.

Travel is not only about destinations. It is about the people beside us.

As we continued the trip home, we began discussing our favorite moments and wondering where a future adventure might take us.

The Alaska journey was ending, but the family story created during the trip was coming home with us.

Short-Term Rental Takeaway

Hospitality Is About More Than Lodging

The best hospitality experiences do more than provide a bed. They create a sense of welcome, comfort, care, convenience, and connection.

That is true on a cruise ship, in a hotel, and in a short-term rental.

At EPStay, our goal is not merely to provide houses. We want our properties to become settings where families reconnect, celebrate milestones, visit loved ones, complete important work, recover after long days, and create stories they will remember.

A vacation rental may be where children swim for the first time. It may be where relatives gather for a graduation. It may be where a military family reunites. It may be where parents relax after taking their children to local attractions. It may be where a business traveler finally feels comfortable after weeks away from home.

The property supports the experience, but the people create the memories. Exceptional hospitality helps make those memories possible.

Qalbi & Libby’s Adventure Journal

Dear Journal,

Today we had to say goodbye to our giant ship. We packed everything and walked through the hallways one more time. We did not want to leave.

We waved goodbye and kept looking back.

Our favorite parts were the glaciers, the blue ice, the mountains, the little boats, the shows, the pizza, the ice cream, and being together as a family.

Libby said she wants our next trip to have penguins.

We do not know where we are going next, but we think another cruise would be a good idea.

Alaska was cold, beautiful, and full of giant things. Giant mountains. Giant glaciers. Giant ships. Maybe even giant fish.

We are taking all our pictures and memories home.

The end. Until our next adventure.

A family vacation rental can become part of a child’s memory of a trip. They may remember the pool, their room, a game they played, breakfast with the family, or a funny moment in the living room long after the stay ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should travelers check before leaving a cabin?

Look through drawers, the closet, the safe, outlets near beds, and the bathroom. Small items like chargers, jewelry, medication, and documents are the ones most often forgotten in the final rush.

How can families preserve travel memories?

Organize photos soon after returning, write down small details, and talk about favorite moments together. Simple habits help the memories stay vivid long after the trip.

Why let children write their own travel journals?

A child’s journal captures the trip from a different perspective. Their observations and small details are often the sweetest parts of the memory and are worth preserving in their own words.

What makes hospitality memorable?

Hospitality becomes memorable when guests feel welcomed, cared for, and comfortable. Clean spaces, clear communication, and thoughtful details matter more than perfection or luxury alone.

How can a vacation rental become part of the trip experience?

A well-prepared home becomes a setting for meals, quiet time, celebrations, rest, and family conversations. When guests feel at home, the property becomes part of the memories they take with them.
