Discovering Icy Strait Point – Alaska’s Hidden Treasure
Published June 18, 2026 · EPStay Travel Journal

Icy Strait Point quickly became one of our favorite places on the trip.
Unlike a large city or a heavily developed tourist district, the destination felt peaceful, distinctive, and connected to the surrounding community.
The historic buildings, waterfront, harbor, forested landscape, walking areas, and Native Alaskan cultural presence gave Icy Strait Point an atmosphere that felt different from the other stops.
The pace was slower. Instead of feeling as though we needed to rush from one attraction to another, we could simply walk, look around, take photographs, talk, and enjoy being together.
The historic Icy Strait Point building created one of the most recognizable backdrops of the trip.
Standing in front of it, we took a photograph together that captured the character of the destination. The building, waterfront, and surrounding trees made the area feel almost like a storybook setting.
The girls were especially interested in the possibility of seeing wildlife. They kept looking toward the trees, water, and distant areas in case a bear or another animal appeared.
Every movement created a new question. “Was that a bear?” “Did something move?” “Can bears swim?” “Are they hiding behind the trees?”
Even without a dramatic wildlife encounter, the search became part of their experience.
The harbor and small boats added to the peaceful character of the area.
There was something refreshing about visiting a place that did not feel identical to every other travel destination. Icy Strait Point had its own visual identity and local story.
It reminded us that travel is often most meaningful when we allow a destination to be itself. We do not always need the biggest attraction or the busiest schedule.
Sometimes a walk through a distinctive place creates stronger memories than a day filled with tightly timed activities. The conversations, scenery, family photographs, and relaxed pace became the experience.
Short-Term Rental Takeaway
Authenticity Matters
Many travelers select vacation rentals because they want to experience a destination in a more personal way.
They may prefer a neighborhood, kitchen, yard, private gathering space, or local setting instead of a standardized hotel environment.
That does not mean every property should be filled with themed decorations or exaggerated claims.
Authenticity comes from honest descriptions, useful local information, thoughtful design, and a host who understands the area.
At EPStay, we want guests to experience El Paso rather than simply sleep in it. That includes helping them find local restaurants, family attractions, parks, shopping areas, cultural destinations, practical services, and neighborhood favorites.
Generic recommendations are easy to find online. A host can provide greater value by helping guests understand what local residents actually enjoy and what is most convenient from the property.
Vacation rentals are often strongest when they connect guests to the real character of a destination.

Qalbi & Libby’s Adventure Journal
Dear Journal,
Today we went to Icy Strait Point. It looked like a place from a storybook.
There were old-looking buildings, trees, water, and little boats.
We walked around and looked everywhere for bears. We really wanted to see one. Every time something moved, we thought it might be a bear. Mommy said maybe we would see one next time.
Daddy and Mommy took a picture in front of the big Icy Strait Point building. The sign was very big.
We liked walking near the water. The boats looked tiny next to the mountains and trees.
Even though we did not find a bear, we still had fun looking. Maybe the bears saw us, but we did not see them.
Children often remember the small details of a destination. Local books, games, simple maps, neighborhood suggestions, and family-friendly recommendations can help a vacation rental make the destination more exciting for them.
