Exploring Juneau – Alaska’s Incredible Capital
Published June 16, 2026 · EPStay Travel Journal
Our first major Alaska port experience brought us to Juneau.
Unlike most state capitals, Juneau cannot simply be reached by driving along a highway from another part of the country. Surrounded by mountains and water, the city immediately felt different from anywhere we had visited before.
Approaching the area from the ship allowed us to see how the community fits into the landscape. Buildings, boats, roads, mountains, trees, and water all seemed connected. The natural surroundings did not sit far outside the city. They were part of the city.
Walking through downtown, we found local shops, restaurants, colorful buildings, waterfront views, and travelers exploring in every direction.
The mountain scenery looked almost unreal. Every direction seemed to offer another postcard-worthy view.
The girls enjoyed walking along the waterfront and looking at the boats while we took in the scale of the mountains around us.
The air felt different. The buildings looked different. Even an ordinary walk through town felt like part of the experience because the setting was so distinctive.
One of the things we appreciated about Juneau was that the destination did not depend on one single attraction. The city itself became part of the adventure.
Walking, looking, talking, taking photographs, exploring shops, and spending time together created a full day without needing every minute to be tightly scheduled.
Traveling with children changes how a family experiences a destination. Adults may focus on history, scenery, local culture, architecture, and logistics. Children often notice boats, unusual buildings, souvenirs, snacks, animals, and whether the mountains look like they touch the clouds.
Their observations helped us experience Juneau differently. They reminded us that the most meaningful part of a family trip is not completing a list. It is seeing the destination together.
As we returned toward the ship, we looked back at Juneau and realized how quickly a place can become part of a family memory. A few hours earlier, it had been a name on an itinerary. Now it was somewhere our daughters had walked, explored, photographed, and talked about.

Short-Term Rental Takeaway
Location Is Part of the Guest Experience
Juneau reminded us that travelers do not simply reserve a place to sleep. They reserve access to a destination.
Location affects how easily guests can reach restaurants, attractions, hospitals, workplaces, military installations, stores, entertainment, family members, and transportation routes.
At EPStay, we understand that guests select a home partly because of what surrounds it.
Our El Paso properties are positioned to help travelers access important parts of the city, including major roadways, Fort Bliss, shopping, restaurants, medical facilities, family attractions, and local neighborhoods.
Hosts should describe location honestly and help guests understand what is nearby. They should also explain realistic drive times instead of using vague claims such as “close to everything.”
A strong short-term rental experience connects the guest to the destination. The home provides comfort, but the location helps make the trip possible.

Qalbi & Libby’s Adventure Journal
Dear Journal,
Today we went to Juneau! The mountains were SO BIG. They looked like they were touching the clouds.
We got off the ship and walked around the town. There were boats, buildings, stores, and lots of things to look at.
Mommy wanted to take pictures. Daddy wanted to make sure we knew how to get back to the ship.
We found little stores, and Mommy looked at souvenirs. We wanted everything. Daddy said we could not fit all of Alaska into our suitcase.
We liked looking at the water and the mountains. It felt like the whole town was sitting between the ocean and the sky.
Juneau was very different from home. We think Alaska has the biggest mountains in the world.
Children enjoy trips more when families can easily reach the places they came to visit. A well-located vacation rental can mean less time in the car and more time exploring, playing, and making memories.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Juneau unusual among state capitals?
Juneau is not connected to the rest of the country by road. Surrounded by mountains and water, visitors reach it by air or sea, which gives the city a very different feel from most state capitals.
What should families wear while exploring?
Comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing are ideal. A light rain layer is helpful because Alaska weather changes quickly, even during summer months.
Is Juneau enjoyable without an overly full schedule?
Yes. The downtown area, waterfront, and mountain views are enjoyable at a relaxed pace. Families do not need to fill every minute to have a memorable day.
Why should travelers monitor ship return time?
Cruise ships depart on schedule. Watching the clock and returning early helps avoid the stress of rushing back and ensures no one is left behind.
What makes location important in travel lodging?
Location shapes access to restaurants, activities, workplaces, and services. Guests choose lodging not only for the space itself but also for what surrounds it and how easy it is to reach.
